Best drones you can buy from Amazon

The best camera drones used to be little more than novelty toys for gadget-heads, but it’s all different now. These days you’re more likely to find the best camera drones in the hands of photographers and videographers both amateur and professional. This is because they allow the user to shoot from creative angles and get unique perspectives that simply wouldn’t be possible with any other camera.

The big difference these days is that the camera technology in drones has come a long way, with larger sensors, better video resolutions, and improved stabilization systems powered by onboard gimbals. Then there’s also the fact that intelligent flight controls are getting better and better, making drones so easy to fly that even a total novice can pick up the basics in minutes.

Of course, there are rules and responsibilities that come with drone flying. Before you take a drone into the air, it’s well worth checking out our guide to drones rules in the US, the UK, and beyond. Rules apply to drones of different sizes depending on the country, so even if you’re using a tiny drone, it’s worth reading up.

Every drone featured in this guide will give you fantastic results for photos and video. Each one has a camera supported by a powered gimbal for stabilized shooting, designed to counteract the bumps and buffets that come with flight. We’ve included drones suited to a range of different budgets, each of which has different levels of intelligent flight control and camera technology. While there are cheap drones that will do a good job, the rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. If your budget is tight, check out our guide to the best cheap drones you can buy right now.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 595g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 20MP
Flight time: 31 minutes
Range: 8km-12km

REASONS TO BUY:

Large 1-Inch sensor
Small and lightweight

REASONS TO AVOID:

No adjustable aperture
Controller isn’t foldable

The fantastic Air 2S combines the greatest characteristics of our previous two favourite DJI drones, the Mavic Air 2 and Mavic 2 Pro. You get the former’s tiny, foldable design as well as the latter’s 20MP 1-Inch sensor. The combination is fantastic, making the Air 2S our top pick for enthusiasts and professionals who require a compact drone that they can take with them wherever they go.

While the Mavic Air 2 is still a viable option for those on a tighter budget, the Air 2S offers several useful improvements over its predecessor. The ability to record 5.4K video at 30 frames per second provides you with more creative freedom, and it also features a useful digital zoom option (though we only advocate using it at 2x zoom). When you add in the ability to shoot 1080p at 120fps and outstanding high ISO performance, you have a fantastic all-around flying machine that soars above its mid-range competitors.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 835g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 20MP
Flight time: 40 minutes
Range: 12KM

REASONS TO BUY:

1-inch sensor with adjustable aperture
40-minute flight time

REASONS TO AVOID:

Costs more than Air 2S
No D-Log profile

The Evo Lite+ competes directly with the Air 2S as the flagship flying machine from Autel’s current line-up of DJI rivals. It uses a 1-inch sensor to shoot 5.4K footage at 30fps and has a remarkably comparable feature sheet. With its 40-minute flight length and customizable aperture (ranging from f/2.8 to f/11), it outperforms both the Air 2S and the Mavic Pro 2. The Lite+ variant lacks the Evo Lite’s fourth-axis stability, but the bigger pixels on its sensor allow it to absorb more light in low-light situations.

The lack of 10-bit video and D-Log profile may cause concern among professional drone videographers, while the loss of side sensors for obstacle avoidance is a shame. However, the Lite+ is an amazingly adaptable piece of flying camera equipment in all other regards. Its 20MP sensor is perhaps the greatest camera available on a drone today for the money, giving the Air 2S a run for its money.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 570g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 12MP
Battery size: 3,950 mAh
Range: 10km

REASONS TO BUY:

Very easy to fly
Shoots great 4K/60p video
Strong 34-minute battery life

REASONS TO AVOID:

Camera feed sometimes stutters
No screen on the controller

The DJI Air 2S has pushed the Mavic Air 2, which was previously our best-selling drone, out of the spotlight (see number one). However, you shouldn’t rule it out as a possibility because it’s less expensive than the Air 2S and may fit you better if you don’t want the new model’s larger 1-inch sensor.

It still shoots 4K/60p video, has a 34-minute flight duration, and a comparable maximum range of 10 kilometers. You also get the same subject-tracking capabilities as the Air 2S, as well as a slightly longer flight time of 34 minutes and that convenient, compact folding design. While we recommend the Air 2S if you can, the Mavic Air 2 is still a good choice because of its larger sensor and useful digital zoom.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 249g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 12MP
Battery size: 2,600 mAh
Range: 5.8 GHz: 4000 m (FCC); 2500 m (SRRC)

REASONS TO BUY:

Smart, collapsible design
Incredibly stable video capture

REASONS TO AVOID:

No 4K or 60fps 2.7K video
No object tracking

The DJI Mini 2 has now replaced it, but this ultra-compact drone will remain on the market – which is fantastic news for anyone looking for a somewhat more cheap palm-sized drone with the excellent video quality. The Mavic Mini lacks raw photo capturing, Ocusync 2.0 communication (for greater range), and some new motors when compared to its newer sibling, but it is still quite competitive and still outperforms any other drone in its weight category.

It’s a shame there’s no ActiveTrack object tracking or ‘follow me’ function, as there is on the Mini 2, but if you’re just getting started with aerial photography or filming,
is a terrific choice. We’ll also be keeping a watch on its pricing to see if it drops further lower into the super-bargain territory.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 80g
Controller: Optional
Camera resolution: 5MP
Flight time: 13 minutes
Range: 100m

REASONS TO BUY:

Responsive flight controls
Lightweight and compact

REASONS TO AVOID:

Choppy video transmission
Unstable in wind

The Ryze Tello is a pleasant drone for first-time flyers because it is simple, lightweight, and economical. Despite its low price, the Tello packs a punch: the battery lasts a respectable 13 minutes, and the Tello can hover in place and execute a variety of automatic tricks thanks to downward-facing light sensors.

When streaming 720p HD video, the image quality from the nose-mounted 5MP camera is less spectacular, with a limited dynamic range and apparent compression artefacts. Because video is transmitted directly to your smartphone, any reduction in connection strength affects the frame rate.

However, the app is surprisingly basic and offers a simple method to drive the Tello, with a rewardingly snappy on-screen twin-stick configuration. The theoretical range is 100 metres, but 30-40 metres is more feasible — which, given how easily the 80g Tello can be blown off course by even the smallest breeze, isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

On a quiet day, the Ryze Tello is a blast to fly, flying ahead at a fast clip and reacting quickly to intuitive commands. The limited range is a drawback, but if you don’t accept choppy footage, it’s still the best beginner drone on the market.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 1375g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 20MP
Battery size: 6000mAh
Range: 8km

REASONS TO BUY:

Large 1-inch 20MP sensor
Sturdy and fast drone

Shoots 4K/60p video at 100Mbps

REASONS TO AVOID:

Large and bulky
Pricier than Mavic 2 Pro

More complex than foldable

While the Phantom 4 Pro V.20 isn’t the newest model on this list, it’s still a good choice for pros looking for something durable and trustworthy in windy circumstances. The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 was released in 2018, and it was a significant upgrade over the Phantom 4, with significantly enhanced obstacle avoidance and intelligent flight modes like ActiveTrack. Its 20MP 1-inch sensor can capture stunning raw stills as well as 4K/60p video at 100Mbps in the D-log colour profile.

Of course, because of its size (1,375g), the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 isn’t as portable as the foldable Mavic 2 Pro, which also boasts a 20MP 1-inch sensor. It does, however, come with a mechanical shutter (to eliminate rolling shutter) and a higher 4K frame rate than its smaller sibling. With superb handling and 30 minutes of flight time, it’s well worth considering if you need to shoot high-quality aerial stills and video in severe weather that the Mavic 2 Pro might be unable to handle.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 522g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 12MP
Flight time: 3,800 mAh
Range: 6km

REASONS TO BUY:

Can fly in rain and land on water

Converts into a handheld camera

REASONS TO AVOID:

Image quality falls short of rivals
Lacks Raw video modes

The PowerEgg X is a flyer, not a fryer, despite its culinary name. In a market dominated by water-resistant drones, PowerVision’s airborne orb stands out for its ability to fly in the rain and land on lakes (with the Wizard bundle). The plastic waterproof casing degrades image quality, but the ability to work in – and float on – the wet things opens up a world of creative possibilities.

The modular design, on the other hand, has a lot of flexibility. The PowerEgg X may also be used as a handheld gimbal camera or a self-contained AI camera that can be installed on a tripod and controlled with hand gestures. The disadvantage of the adjustable arrangement is that it takes longer to set up. It may be small, but it takes a few minutes to remove the protective covering from the body, attach the propeller arms, and set up the controller.

The image quality isn’t great, either. In bright situations, the PowerEgg X produces good, detailed 4K footage, but the fixed aperture, fixed-focus 12MP 1/2.8-inch CMOS sensor can’t compete with DJI’s Mavic drones. It’s also not able to capture in raw video formats right now. Even so, the PowerEgg X is one of the best solutions for brief, sharp video sequences in terrible weather.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Weight: 3440g
Controller: Yes
Camera resolution: 30MP
Battery Size: 4280mAh
Range: 7 km

REASONS TO BUY:

Amazing build quality
Good battery life
Plenty of features

REASONS TO AVOID:

Quite pricey

The incredibly amazing Inspire 2 easily defeats its predecessor on this list. It’s a lot more appealing now that it has a sleek aluminum composite bodywork update. Furthermore, with more powerful object avoidance technology, you won’t have to worry about accidentally cutting a tree and scratching that lovely figure.

The twin-battery setup provides more than 25 minutes of flight time, and the option to swap camera lenses gives professional photographers and videographers complete control over their photographs and 5K footage.

This drone is incredibly easy to fly because of the full-featured smartphone software and dedicated remote control, but make no mistake: this is a professional piece of equipment.
